The Story of
Matt and Miriam

If anyone had said to Matthew and Miriam that they would be dating, getting engaged, buying a house together and getting married, all within the year 2004, they both would have laughed thinking it was some kind of joke!

Ian and Rachel - A Match for heavenly purposes
Photograph Unavalible

Rachel had been single for a long time, and was increasingly aware of the stigma of being a female single vicar. She mixed mainly with colleagues and older people who were already married and really couldn't see how her circumstances were going to change......

Sheila and Keith - a Divine Appointment

My husband had died tragically in a motorbike accident two years ago. One of my sons had married and lives in Australia. My other son had moved to London to work, so I was finally alone and felt that at 58 I might have many years ahead of me, living on my own.

Forbes and Eunice - an unexpected surprise

Forbes is the sort of man who doesn't do things by halves. His approach to life was reflected in the way he approached finding a soul mate through Friends First. He joined the organisation in January 2004 and was soon receiving a lot of profiles of women.

John Cox and Phoebe Whitton - now Mr and Mrs Cox!

When my late wife Doreen was terminally ill, she encouraged me to remarry sometime in the future if I met the right lady, in the knowledge that perhaps I wouldn't do too well living on my own for a long period with its associated loneliness.

David and Gill
If you are friends first you never know what will happen

David and Gill on their wedding day

David begins the story...

I have been a Vicar in the Church of England for 25 years. I was married in 1981 and divorced in 2000; our four children remained with me. A year later, I 'went out' with a woman I had known in the 1970s (I also knew her ex-husband), but the relationship ended and I got on with being a lone parent. I felt confident about myself but didn't know how to meet potential Christian 'dates', and after another year I was feeling very down about 'meeting someone'.

Graham and Helen

Being a widower and extremely lonely, my attention was drawn to an article in a Christian magazine about a lady who had found a companion through friendsfirst. It gave me hope that maybe I, too, might meet somebody for friendship to begin with, and who know, God willing, possibly even a wife.

A life-changing experience - when the Lord decided it was time for Hayley and Chris
Hayley and Chris

Hayley Hemming was very involved with young people at her church, but all the people of her age were married already. So although she had a wide circle of friends, she looked in vain for the really close relationship which would lead to marriage.

Rosemary and Neil  - trusting God at all times

After my separation and subsequent divorce I spent the first few years believing that God would restore my marriage. Then when it became clear that my husband had permanently broken our marriage covenant and was pursuing divorce so that he could remarry, I began to realise that God would never force him against his will. At that time I held the view that remarriage after divorce was not allowable even for the "innocent" party. There were some clear defining moments when I moved from this position to doing what amounts to a complete U-turn.

Allan and Jill - A marriage made in heaven for sure!

Both Jill and Allan came together under the providence of God. They did not know each other; one hundred miles separated them. Jill was a single lady aged 70 years and Allan was 71 years old, who was a widower.

John and Irene
When you're not looking for love...

In March 1998 my world was completely shattered – my husband announced that our marriage of 28 years was over. I was devastated. I was married to a vicar and had worked alongside him throughout his ministry. When we parted, I left behind my home, my church, my friends and my job. I had to cope with four bereavements.

Peter and Virginia

I had reached the age of 38 and had not met anybody special in my life. Feeling rather low one day I complained to God as I had no doubt that he could bring the right person into my life with ease even if they lived the other side of the world. After I moaned I felt as if the Lord was saying to me don't moan do something about it. I then realised that I wasn't meant to sit around waiting for Mr Right.

Friends First and Forever
Eric and Margaret aren't too late for love

I was 81 when Elma died; we'd been happily married for 56 years. The real shock of being alone came after our three children had left for their homes after the funeral. The nearest was 130 miles away. They wouldn't be popping in to see if their Dad was all right. Our little house felt like a huge railway station after the last train had gone

David and Pat - Life begins at retirement
David and Pat on their wedding day

When Pat was widowed suddenly at the age of 47 she didn't really expect to spendthe rest of her life as a single. However, after almost 14 years without a husband, and some of disappointing relationships, she was getting accustomed to the single life and was feeling quite good about the fact that she had been able to come through such a major trauma successfully, with a stronger Christian faith.

It's never too late for love

In July 2000 my beloved husband died & my wonderful happy life ended-at times I wished it actually would. I was devastated. The 1st year was just grief and numbness. The 2nd emptiness and the feeling ' Is this my life from now on ?' I belonged to a church ,was a member of the choir and had friends, one in particular I used to go out with one day a week.

John starts…..

What! Start courting all over again at my age (69)! And what about the loyalty to my late wife to whom I was married for 45 years? These were just two of the questions that went through my mind when joining friendsfirst. But prayerfully and with much trepidation I did.

An Anonymous Couple
No photo available

The couple in this story asked for their names not to be used and for the location to be vague – the woman is an Anglican priest in the Midlands and the man a research scientist who lived 90 miles from her home. At the time of meeting the woman was 45 and the man almost 50. If you are looking for hope for your situation read on....

Charles and Andrea

Charles and Andrea were both in their 30's when they joined friendsfirst. A key aspect for them both in joining was that it was Christian. In addition Charles had moved into the countryside and didn't know many people there, and the number of single men Andrea was meeting through
friends and church was minimal.
