I have been a Vicar in the Church of England for 25 years. I was married in 1981 and divorced in 2000; our four children remained with me. A year later, I 'went out' with a woman I had known in the 1970s (I also knew her ex-husband), but the relationship ended and I got on with being a lone parent. I felt confident about myself but didn't know how to meet potential Christian 'dates', and after another year I was feeling very down about 'meeting someone'. |

Being a widower and extremely lonely, my attention was drawn to an article in a Christian magazine about a lady who had found a companion through friendsfirst. It gave me hope that maybe I, too, might meet somebody for friendship to begin with, and who know, God willing, possibly even a wife. |

Hayley Hemming was very involved with young people at her church, but all the people of her age were married already. So although she had a wide circle of friends, she looked in vain for the really close relationship which would lead to marriage. |

After my separation and subsequent divorce I spent the first few years believing that God would restore my marriage. Then when it became clear that my husband had permanently broken our marriage covenant and was pursuing divorce so that he could remarry, I began to realise that God would never force him against his will. At that time I held the view that remarriage after divorce was not allowable even for the "innocent" party. There were some clear defining moments when I moved from this position to doing what amounts to a complete U-turn. |

In March 1998 my world was completely shattered – my husband announced that our marriage of 28 years was over. I was devastated. I was married to a vicar and had worked alongside him throughout his ministry. When we parted, I left behind my home, my church, my friends and my job. I had to cope with four bereavements. |

When Pat was widowed suddenly at the age of 47 she didn't really expect to spendthe rest of her life as a single. However, after almost 14 years without a husband, and some of disappointing relationships, she was getting accustomed to the single life and was feeling quite good about the fact that she had been able to come through such a major trauma successfully, with a stronger Christian faith. |

Ruth attended Loughborough Elim Pentecostal Church in Leicestershire for over 12 years which she enjoyed lthough there was never anybody of the same age as herself. Although she had friends she always felt lonely and wanted someone special to talk and pray and share her life with. |
